XRD (X-ray diffractometer)

Alongside our XRF spectrometer we have a Rigaku Miniflex II X-ray diffractometer (XRD). This unit can analyze a variety of crystalline materials, including powders of various rock types, soils, and crystals precipitated from solutions. We use the software package PDXL to assist in identifying peaks and matching mineral phases. We can quickly prepare many samples for analysis using typical glass microscope slides. For more precise analyses, we use a single-crystal quartz slide to eliminate background noise. The facility is overseen by Dr. Allen Glazner.
