This composite dike in the Woods Lake basin contains mafic phases with felsic enclaves, and, in this dramatic outcrop, a felsic phase with mafic enclaves (closeup view). The long axes of these mafic enclaves are aligned north-south, consistent with the interpretation that they formed during oblique north-south opening of Independence dikes (Glazner et al., 1997, and in review). Alternatively, enclaves may have aligned themselves during solid-state sinistral ductile deformation within the dike, an interpretation supported by field evidence elsewhere in the Sierra (e.g., Carl et al., 1995).
